The anti-victim agreement with the government is not justified: Chairman Ramesh Century
Kathmandu.Microfinance victims have accused the government of being against the 5-point agreement reached between the government and the Microfinance and Financial Exploitation Struggle Committee led by Maniram Gyawali. Organizing a press conference at Sambad Dabali in the capital on Saturday, the ‘Peasant-Workers Movement Against Microfinance and Financial Exploitation’ said that the agreement signed by Gyawali was betrayal.
Ramesh Century, chairman of the Peasants-Workers Movement, accused Gyawali of compromising with the government in his favour by deceiving the victims who have been protesting for the past 5 years.
Century said the anti-victim agreement ignores the voices of most victims and complicates matters.
“The agreement to implement the same on the basis of the 6-point report made public after the talks between the government and the victims in June 2081 is a blatant betrayal, which was completely anti-victim,” Century said.
Century said that there are 60 million microfinance victims across the country and all of them are against the agreement.
Suresh Ghimire, the incharge of the movement, accused Maniram Gyawali of trying to sabotage the 5-year-old continuous agitation. Stating that most of the victims are still in the field of struggle, Ghimire said, “Gyawali ji has betrayed the victims and sold the movement by kneeling before the government of Nepal, but we will not allow it to succeed.” Ghimire said
that the government of Nepal has come out with a report saying that there is a problem in the microfinance institutions but will not take action against them. “It is unfortunate that Chairman Maniram Gyawali himself signed on the basis of such an anti-victim report,” Ghimire added.
Vice-chairpersons of the movement, Bimala Gajmer and Hari Maya Malla, said that they would continue the agitation until they get justice as the agreement signed by Gyawali is completely anti-victim. General Secretary Damodar Dhakal accused Gyawali of committing suicide in panic when the victims were starting their march from July 26 under the leadership of his organization. Secretary Hom Bahadur Khadka expressed anger over the government’s irresponsibility and excesses of microfinance institutions and the government’s irresponsibility. Secretariat member Jogendra Yadav said that the microfinance institutions have been harassing Madhes the most and warned that they would be chased away from the villages in the coming days.
