London. Renowned Nepali-origin mountaineer Nirmal Purja (Nimsdai) died in an avalanche at Broad Peak, according to the Nimsdai Foundation.

The foundation said in a statement on its official Facebook page that other team members who lost their lives in the avalanche have also been confirmed.”Today, it is with profound sorrow and anguish that we confirm that Nirmal ‘Nimsdai’ Purja has tragically passed away following an avalanche at Broad Peak.

It has also been confirmed that some other members of the expedition are not alive. “Today, we are remembering not only Nims but also all those who lost their lives in this tragic incident, including his trusted climbing partners and guides Pur Bahadur Gurung (Yukta) and Nima Sherpa. “His legacy will live on forever through the countless lives he changed and the countless people he inspired,” the statement said.

“Out of respect to all the families concerned, we will not be making any further comment except as confirmed by the relevant authorities,” the foundation said in a statement. According to the foundation, the accident happened at around 12 noon on Thursday. A 10-member team climbing the 8,047-metre-high Broad Peak had reached an altitude of 6,600 metres when the massive avalanche occurred. The team lost contact with the team on Thursday morning and a big avalanche was reported the same evening. (ANI)
