. Economist Prof. Dr. KATHMANDU: Gopilal Neupane has said that the role played by Kakani rural municipality in the management of garbage in the Kathmandu Valley should be properly evaluated. He was of the view that Kakani should be developed as a centre of development, investment and possibilities by ending the tendency to see Kakani only as a garbage dumping place.

Speaking at an interaction organized by the National Press Club on the problems and possibilities of the local levels, Neupane said that Kakani has been managing the waste generated from Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kavre and Sindhupalchowk for a long time.

He said that the waste producing sector should ensure its responsibility and contribution in its management.

“It is not fair for another citizen to bear the garbage he produces for years for free,” Neupane said. Stating that the people of Kakani have been facing foul smell, health problems and social impacts, he said their contribution should be recognised.

He praised Kakani Rural Municipality Chairman Suman Tamang and Ward No. 3 Chair Ghanashyam among other people’s representatives for working with the desire for change.

According to him, although the local levels have forwarded some positive works including road construction, much remains to be done in Kakani.

Neupane suggested that the local levels should work together with the local governments of Kathmandu Valley by formulating a long-term plan for the development of Kakani.

He said that Kakani should prepare concept of big projects up to Rs 10 billion, Rs 20 billion or Rs 50 billion and present it to the local governments including Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur.
