Kathmandu. The meeting of the Committee on Strengthening Federalism and National Concerns discussed on the issues of supply, distribution, price control, quality, market monitoring and protection and promotion of consumer rights.
Speaking at the meeting, CPN-UML lawmaker Roshani Meche said although the discussion is timely, its effectiveness depends on its implementation.
He said that the expected results would be achieved only if the Ministry implements the recommendations of the committee.
Supporting the issues raised by organizations working in the field of consumer interest and consumer forums, she said that the National Assembly committee should further study and research in this regard. According to him, the study would help the government in good governance and public welfare works.
Lawmaker Meche stressed on the effective implementation of consumer courts.
She said that although many issues related to consumer rights have been identified, it is a serious matter that cases have not been registered in the consumer court so far.
“It is unfortunate that effective action has not been taken against the crimes that play with the health of the citizens,” she said. She also demanded establishment of consumer court in all seven provinces.
He said that necessary legal reforms should be made to make the market monitoring rights given to the local level effective.
She said that the problem has surfaced as the inedible items were found during the monitoring coordinated by the deputy mayor or vice-chairperson, but they did not have the authority to take immediate action.
She stressed on the need to amend the Consumer Protection Act and give necessary executive powers to the monitoring bodies at the local level. Lawmaker Meche said that the government should pay attention to control the sale of online fraud and substandard goods along with the expansion of digital market. Saying the sale of substandard and inedible goods and charging unnatural price has increased through social networking sites and online platforms including Facebook,
Instagram and TikTok, she demanded clarification of legal provisions for its effective regulation.
In the meeting, she also drew the attention of the government towards the possibility of becoming self-reliant in petroleum products.
