Kathmandu. In the last one month, Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has increased the price of petroleum products time and again with the consent of the government. Meanwhile, the price of petrol has been increased by 66 percent and diesel by 66 percent.
The war between the US-Israel alliance and Iran has caused the price of petroleum products to skyrocket in the international market, which has had a direct impact on countries like Nepal, which imports petroleum products. The price of diesel and kerosene has been increased by Rs 142 per litre after the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) increased the price of diesel and kerosene by Rs 142 per litre to be effective from Thursday morning. This is 66.90 percent more than the previous year. In March 14, the price of diesel was Rs 142.
Meanwhile, the price of petrol has increased by almost 40 percent. The price of petrol has increased from Rs 157 till March 15 to Rs 219 now. Likewise, the price of aviation fuel (ATF) has been increased to Rs 256 per litre. The NOC had on April 2 increased the price of aviation fuel by Rs 124 per litre to Rs 251 per litre.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has already adjusted the airfare due to the hike in fuel prices. According to CAAN, the passengers have to pay a maximum of Rs 11,016 for the Kathmandu-Bhairahawa route. The fare has been increased by Rs 2,535. Similarly, the highest price has been set at Rs 23,059 for Kathmandu-Dhangadhi route. The fare has increased by Rs 5,435 compared to the previous time.
Similarly, the Department of Transport Management has increased the fare of passenger vehicles by 16.71 percent and the freight fare of goods vehicles operating on hilly roads by 21.68 percent. Likewise, the fare for goods vehicles on the Terai route has been increased by 15.75 percent.
It is not that the government of Nepal has not given subsidy on petroleum products. Earlier, the government had reduced customs duty on petroleum products and infrastructure development tax by 50 percent. This means Rs 17 on petrol and Rs 12 on diesel. But the government has also been criticized by the general public for inadequate according to international practice.
