Kathmandu. Deputy Speaker Ruby Kumari Thakur has announced that she will not participate in the wedding ceremony. She has given a strong message against the dowry system by making this opinion public through social media Facebook.
Stating that she would not be able to attend the dowry-based marriage, she urged the society to move towards dowry-free, equality-based and cultured marriage.
“It is not only socially unacceptable and punishable to receive or receive dowry, but also to accept marriages based on such customs, to attend ceremonies or to receive a feast,” she said.
Thakur, the deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, said that the dowry system would have serious impact on the dignity, equality and rights of women and a collective initiative was needed to end it.
She also urged the government to include a clear message of ‘dowry-free marriage’ in the marriage invitation letter and urged all sides to spread awareness that taking and giving dowry is a social and legal crime.
