612 Nepalis duped from Southeast Asia rescued

Kathmandu. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has intensified the rescue of Nepalis who have been cheated in online digital scamming centers operated in the South East Asian region. According to the ministry’s spokesperson Lok Bahadur Poudel Chhetri, a total of 612 Nepalis have been rescued from Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos so far.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, he said that among those rescued, 487 were from Cambodia, 111 from Myanmar, 8 from Laos and 6 from Thailand. He said, “Nepalis who were cheated in online digital scamming centers operating in the Southeast Asian region have been rescued. Among those rescued, 487 are from Cambodia, 111 from Myanmar, 8 from Laos and 6 from Thailand. ’

Currently, the travel documents of 53 more people have been prepared and preparations are underway to repatriate them soon, the ministry said. Since 2021, the number of Nepalis visiting Cambodia for various purposes has reached 21,000 and many of them are believed to be involved in suspected fraud centers. The Cambodian government recently arrested nine Nepalis for their alleged involvement in various criminal activities, Chhetri said.

We have received that 5 of them will be produced before the Sim Rip Provincial Court for organized fraud and 4 will be detained for investigation. ’
