. KATHMANDU: An agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters between the Government of Nepal and the Government of the Republic of India has been presented in today’s meeting of the House of Representatives. Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Sobita Gautam, presented the mutual legal assistance agreement in the meeting.
The Agreement was signed between the Government of Nepal and the Government of India on April 19, 2002 pursuant to the Nepal Treaty Act, 47 (6).
According to Section 10 of the Act, an agreement has been reached to make the investigation and prosecution of criminal acts and other judicial proceedings effective and facilitated through mutual legal assistance.
Minister Gautam said that this agreement between the two countries will help in punishing the criminals and bring back the property earned through crime.
The implementation of the agreement is expected to contribute significantly to strengthening the rule of law and enhancing coordination in the establishment of justice administration.
Minister Gautam said that the implementation of the agreement would prove to be a milestone in making the control of financial crimes, investigation, prosecution and justice delivery more effective in Nepal and would contribute to the mutual cooperation in combating money laundering and terrorist financing.
