Educational institutions or call centers? Nobel Academy’s teacher is being made a laborer, seriously compromising students’ privacy

Kathmandu. The approach adopted by the Nobel Academy in the name of student admission has raised questions on the dignity of the education sector. It has been revealed that the college has given unauthorized access to the privacy of the students by using the teachers known as the intellectual class as ‘marketing agents’ and ‘labor’.

Student data theft and illegal’contact network’

The Nobel Academy has been found to collect the personal mobile numbers of students who have given SEE across the country from various illegal sources. The college obtains the private information of students and parents through ‘settings’ with schools or through various institutions. It is legally punishable to take personal information without the consent of the person concerned and use it for commercial purposes. The college uses the data it collects as a key tool in its admissions drive.

Teachers being made ‘call boys’: Daily targets and pressures

At first glance, this style of college looks like a professional ‘call center’. At the beginning of the academic session, instead of allowing teachers to prepare to teach in the classroom, they are handed a list of students and cell phones. The main problems faced by teachers are as follows:

Compulsory calls: Teachers are obliged to call unfamiliar students using their personal mobile number.

Daily Target: The college administration assigns teachers a ‘task’ to call a certain number of students every day.

Cultivation of Temptation: Students are subjected to mental pressure to enroll in college by means of a variety of assurances and inducements over the phone.

Commercialization of Education and Exploitation of Labor

Using teachers as ‘labourers’ to find students has not only hurt their self-esteem but has also directly affected the quality of teaching. The violation of students’ right to privacy on the one hand, and the forcible use of intellectual manpower as market agents on the other, has exposed the business mindset of the Nobel Academy.

This case has exposed the bitter reality of the extent to which the so-called big colleges of Kathmandu adopt ‘unethical’ means to attract students. The Ministry of Education and the regulatory body need to increase monitoring on this issue immediately.
