. KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Education and Sports has expressed concern over the incident of a teacher allegedly assaulting a student at Khawaling School in Bouddha, Kathmandu.
Education Minister Sasmit Pokharel has consulted with the victim students, school administrators and principals after a video clip of Sona Rana’s thrashing of a grade 4 student went viral on social media.
Minister Pokharel held a separate meeting with the victim students and enquired about the incident. He also provided sports materials to the students and encouraged them to continue their studies and sports.
During the discussion, Minister Pokharel expressed the belief that the Ministry would facilitate in forwarding the legal process in case of incident if necessary.
He also drew the attention of the school to provide necessary counseling and caution to the teachers involved in the incident without further psychological impact on the students.
He also urged the schools to conduct necessary training and capacity building programs for teachers to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. According to the Ministry, although the incident took place a year ago, necessary initiatives have been taken after holding discussions with the school and the victim’s side to prevent such incidents from happening again.
The incident took place in the month of Poush 2082 B. S. In the video, a 13-year-old student from Baglung was beaten up by a teacher of the same school.
Meanwhile, Rana has publicly apologized for the incident and vowed not to repeat such acts in the future, according to the school. According to Sunil Rana, principal of the school, Rana, a resident of Thali of Kathmandu, was expelled from the school in May last year after necessary investigation into the incident.
According to Principal Rana, the video was shot by a teacher of the school and has now been made public on social media.
According to the headmaster, the teacher who made the video public was also expelled from the school in April last year due to not satisfactory teaching work.
The school said the video had now gone viral on social media due to dissatisfaction with the expulsion.
