. Civic leader and former minister Dr. Leaders of various political parties have expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Devendra Raj Pandey.
They reached Pashupati Aryaghat on Saturday to pay their last respects to Pandey’s contribution to democracy, civil rights and good governance.
Spokesperson of the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN), Narayan Kaji Shrestha, said that the country has lost a leading figure of the democratic movement in the wake of Pandey’s death.
He has played an important role on behalf of the civil society in the campaign of advancing the peace process, making the Constituent Assembly successful and establishing a democratic republic.
He said, “As a pioneer of Nepal’s democratic movement, his contribution is important in the context of taking the peace process forward or making it successful and establishing a democratic republican system.”
Pandey’s demise, especially as he played a leading role in the civil society, has deeply saddened everyone. Former Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota described Dr Pandey as a multi-dimensional personality. According to him, Dr Pandey has made a special identity in administration, politics and as a social activist in recent times. “With his demise, the country has lost a true guardian of democracy,” Sapkota said.
He said, “Dr.
Devendra Raj Pandey is a multi-dimensional personality. He has also established himself as a social activist in recent years, be it in the administrative or political field. He was very sincere and loyal to democratic norms and ideals. He was an exemplary person of democracy. We have all felt that we have lost a true guardian. Similarly, Santosh Pariyar, leader of the Progressive Democratic Party, remembered Dr Pandey as a pioneer of Nepal’s democratic movement, civil society and civil rights campaign.
He said that the role played by Dr. Pandey in favor of people’s rights, democracy and civil liberties since the Panchayat era is education for the new generation and a long history and practice. The main leader of the historic people’s movement of 2006÷063 and a prominent economic and political thinker, Pandey passed away on Friday at the age of 78. Leaders of various political parties, relatives and well-wishers of various political parties had garlanded the mortal body and visited his residence in Bishalnagar and Pashupati Aryaghat to pay tribute to him.
Dr Pandey was cremated on Saturday afternoon.
