Dhangadhi. Dr KC has been staging hunger strike time and again demanding reforms in medical education. KATHMANDU: Dr Govinda KC has announced to stage a hunger strike from Dhangadhi from today.
Dr KC has announced to launch a hunger strike from the dharamshala of Krishna Mandir in Dhangadhi, putting forth a 7-point demand for reforms in the health sector.
Dr KC said he was staging hunger strike to stop the government’s attempts to privatize the health and health sector.
KC said that the government has confirmed this by appointing a person who has invested in private medical college at Shahid Dasharath Chand University of Health Sciences in Geta, Kailali.
He also demanded that the vice-chancellor and registrar appointed at the Shahid Dasharathchand Health Sciences University be removed and a person having no conflict of interest should be brought in.
“The Act has already been formulated to set up the Shahid Dasharath Chand University of Health Sciences, now I have no objection to it,” KC said, adding, “But the appointment of the chancellor and registrar is once again making Geta confusing and harassing the people here. “
The government on July 14 honored the Vice-Chancellor of the Martyr Dasharath Chand University of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Sunil Kumar Joshi and Registrar Dr. Bhim Bahadur Chand was appointed.
Dr. Dr KC has also demanded that the government immediately scrap the decision or proposal to cut scholarships through the Medical Education Commission and increase seats in private colleges without the criteria and infrastructure. KC’s third demand is to implement the legal provisions of the Act to make medical education completely non-profit.
KC has also demanded implementation of written agreements reached with the erstwhile government, protection of health rights of the people in the border areas, an impartial investigation into the vandalism and violence that took place during the Jenji agitation on September 7 and 24 and bringing the culprits to book.
He said that there was an attempt to curtail the right to health of the citizens living in remote areas and it was necessary to take precaution about it.
Previously, Dr. Dr KC was preparing to launch the Satyagraha from Byas area of Darchula. KC, however, said that the Indian security agencies have allowed him to visit the Beas area only for 5 days.
KC has said that he is not in a position to go to Byas via Nepali land due to health reasons and he did not get the pass as demanded by the Indian land.
KC said he had to return to Dhangadhi after conducting a free health camp in Darchula and providing health services to the people of BK area.
“I think perhaps the Indian security agencies had also come to know that I was going to go for satyagraha,” said KC, adding, “So, they did not allow me to use the Indian route as per my request. ’
