Kathmandu. Speaker of the House of Representatives Dol Prasad Aryal has stressed the need to establish Nepal as a health tourism destination based on high value, deep experience and sustainable development, rather than as a cheap destination.

He made the remark while addressing a programme organized on the occasion of International Health Day in Kathmandu on Wednesday. Speaker Aryal stressed the need of freeing Nepal from the tag of ‘budget destination’ and developing it as a ‘premium health destination’. According to him, economic prosperity of the country is not possible only by counting the number of tourists. Rather, the depth of the experience and the quality of income that comes from it are important. Speaker Aryal said that health tourists spend more than ordinary tourists and stay for a long time.

They travel not only for luxury but also for spiritual peace and the meaning of life, for which Nepal’s Himalayas, holy rivers and ancient yoga traditions can be a unique product for the world. Stating that Nepal has immense potentials in the context of health tourism expanding rapidly across the globe and transforming it into a billion-dollar economy, Aryal said that areas from Badimalika and Khaptad in the west to Rara, Lumbini, Manang and Mustang of Karnali are the destinations for spiritual experiences. A new tourism model should be developed by integrating nature, culture and spirituality for which a clear policy, national health model and partnership of local community is essential, he said.

Stating that the United Nations General Assembly recognising April 15 as the Health Day was a historic achievement, he said the day was not only a declaration but also a proud moment to rebalance human life, connect with nature and return to spiritual peace. Saying Nepal’s civilization, culture and tradition is an excellent example of health, he said yoga, meditation, ayurveda and co-existence with nature have been the basis of life of Nepalis for thousands of years.
