Kathmandu. Ratnanagar Municipality Mayor Prahlad Sapkota has provided health insurance to 37 families with the money he receives from his services. He has recently provided free health insurance to the poorest and poorest families selected on the basis of the recommendations of the ward offices. Mayor Sapkota has borne the insurance charges of these families from his salary and allowances for the last three months.
Earlier, Mayor Sapkota had provided free health insurance to 200 families with the amount of salary and allowance and ‘Mayako Chino’. According to him, the program was launched to cover about 3,500 families in health insurance annually. However, this program has been stopped after the ‘Genji Movement’.
The municipality has taken a policy decision not to take khada and ‘love token’ in formal programs with the aim of cutting unnecessary expenses. According to the same decision, an amount equal to the token of love that various organizations want to provide is being deposited in the fund of the health department. This amount will also be used for free health insurance and other social works. Earlier, Mayor Sapkota had distributed notebooks, pens and tracksuits to the students of a basic school in Ratnanagar-12 from his three months’ salary.
Chief Sapkota said, “Free health and education is the natural right of the people. The state should provide this service free of cost to all. We aim to include a more effective health insurance program for the poor class in the budget for the coming fiscal year. “He has also been providing scholarships to more than 100 students individually.
According to Mayor Sapkota, poor people can avail health insurance benefits from Ratnanagar Bakulhar Hospital. A ‘Health Treatment Revolving Fund’ of Rs 30 lakh has been set up for the citizens facing problems in treatment.
Likewise, additional Rs 25,000 is being provided to Bharatpur Hospital, Cancer Hospital Chitwan and free blood bank service at Ratnanagar-2.
