. Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokhrel paid a courtesy call on US Chargé d’Affaires to Nepal, Scott Urban, at the latter’s office in Kathmandu on Monday.
Recalling the long diplomatic relations between Nepal and the US, they discussed on further consolidating bilateral relations, common interests and multi-dimensional cooperation.
Likewise, discussions were held on the cooperation from the US government in the education sector and making the collaboration more effective in the coming days, development of technical and vocational education, promotion of skill-oriented education and possible cooperation in sports sector.
The United States has been collaborating in Nepal’s education sector for a long time.
In particular, the U. S. Government supports the Early Grade Reading and Learning Program through the United States Agency for Aid (USAID) as well as the College of Education.
During the meeting, Minister Pokharel expressed the belief that the historical, friendly and trust-based relations between Nepal and the US would be further strengthened in the days to come. Reminding that the incumbent government has been carrying out various reforms in the education sector, he said revision of the national curriculum framework was underway for school education and the Ministry was moving ahead to make practical curriculum rather than theoretical.
He also informed that the curriculum framework was being revised to include sports in the curriculum from the school level.
Minister Pokharel said that the task of evaluating the physical infrastructure of the school has been forwarded and accordingly budget will be allocated to the schools as per the need in the coming days.
He also pledged to work with priority in the areas of physical infrastructures, educational facilities and teacher training.
Minister Pokharel also mentioned that there could be a collaboration with the US government in safe school infrastructure, digital and smart learning, professional capacity development of teachers, school health and nutrition, among others.
On the occasion, Ambassador Arbom said his country was positive to extend necessary support through bilateral agreement for the development of education and sports sector in Nepal.
Stating that the US government was aware of the various reform programmes initiated by the Ministry of Education and Sports of Nepal, he said the US was always ready to cooperate and cooperate to that end. He expressed his confidence that the US government would continue to support the efforts of the Government of Nepal for improving public school education.
