Kathmandu. The price of eggs, which had decreased due to the impact of bird flu, has started increasing again. The fall in production and the increase in demand have led to the rise in egg prices.
According to Nepal Layers Poultry Owners Association, the price of egg has increased from Rs 450 per crate to Rs 500 per crate. Similarly, medium egg has been priced at Rs 470 from Rs 420 while the price of small egg has been set at Rs 415. The price of all categories has been increased by Rs 50 per crate.
Association central president Binod Pokharel said the price of eggs has increased as demand for eggs has gradually increased. According to him, the egg production that used to be around 45 lakh per day has come down to around 28 lakh after the impact of bird flu.
Earlier, the price of a crate of egg had reached Rs 550 in mid-May and since then it had dropped to Rs 450. However, despite the recent increase in prices, farmers are still not able to get the same price as the cost of production. According to the association, the cost of one crate of egg is around Rs 573.60, which is equivalent to Rs 19.12 per egg.
Saying the farmers are hopeful that they will get equal price soon, Pokharel pointed out the need for the state to provide relief to the farmers who suffered huge losses due to bird flu.
