. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forest and Environment has completed 44 different development works in the last quarter of the fiscal year 2082÷83. According to the Environment and Biodiversity Division of the Ministry, the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of 16 projects and the Area Determination (SD÷TOR) reports of 11 projects have been approved from April 14, 2008 to July 14, 2008.
According to the progress report made public by the Ministry, there has been an abundance of hydropower projects during this period.
Among the 16 approved EIA reports, 341 MW Budhi Gandaki, 91.15 MW Budhi Gandaki River, 35.15 MW Upper Apsukhola, 22 MW Rolwaling Khola, 30.40 MW Upper Dudhkhola and 34.39 MW Super Budhi Gandaki hydropower projects are approved.
Other physical infrastructures that will be approved by the EIA include Butwal-Pokhara road section, upgradation of Pathlaiya-Hetauda-Narayanghat road, Kohalpur-Surkhet-Babai road and Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office building.
The EIA of DLF Green Apartments in Kathmandu and Biniyatara Cancer Hospital in Dhanusha in the residential category have been approved.
Among the 11 hydropower projects approved for the demarcation of the area, the 325 MW Upper Bheri Semi-Reservoir Hydropower Project and the 124.32 MW Jagdulla ‘A’ Hydropower Project are the major projects.
According to the ministry, the government has approved the area determination report of Nijgadh-Chocha section of East-West Electric Railway, Amlekhgunj-Lothar petroleum pipeline, greenfield terminal and Besishahar-Chame road.
The Ministry has also approved the Modified Environmental Management Plan (Modified Environmental Management Plan) of Lapsiphedi-Ratmate-New Hetauda-New Damauli-New Butwal-India Border 400 kV double circuit transmission line and substations being constructed by MCA-Nepal under the American Cooperation Project (MCC).
The meeting also approved a supplementary EIA for Manang Marsyangdi Hydropower Project (135 MW).
The ministry has also fined two big hospitals for not complying with environmental rules.
Bheri Hospital of Banke and Dhulikhel Hospital of Kavre have been fined.
The ministry has extended the deadline of 2 projects during the same period and has given consent for supplementary EIA study to 5 projects.
According to the ministry’s data, a total of 44 different environmental processes were carried out during the three-month period.
