Congress party cannot reach destination if it focuses on criticism: Sharma
Kathmandu. Nepali Congress (NC) vice-president Bishwa Prakash Sharma has said the party should move ahead for prosperity by linking the thoughts of BP Koirala with the aspirations of youths of the 21st century rather than engaging in the internal criticism.
Addressing the concluding ceremony of the ‘Root Campaign’ and announcement of a new campaign organized by the Nepali Congress at the National Assembly Hall in Kathmandu on Thursday, Sharma said that it would not be possible to reach the destination by focusing on the criticism within the party.
He said, “We will not reach our destination by throwing stones at someone who has gathered and criticized a lot.” On the death anniversary of BP Koirala, let us talk about BP’s thoughts and culture. Let us resolve to move towards the destination of prosperity by integrating BP’s ideas with the sentiments of the youth of the 21st century. Describing climate change as the world’s gravest challenge, Sharma said Nepal was not untouched by its direct impact.
Recalling the drought in June two years ago and inundation in Kathmandu on September 25 the same year, he cited the examples of floods in the Teesta region of India and the death of more than 1,000 pilgrims during Hajj in Saudi Arabia due to 55 degree temperature.”The ICMOD report shows that 47 glacial lakes in our region are at risk of erupting at any time,” he said.
Sharma said that the ‘ Green Run’ organized by the Nepali Congress was not just a running competition but a campaign to make the society aware about climate change.
He said, “We are here to appeal that if the earth is to be protected, then the mountains of Nepal should be saved first.”
A campaign to educate the general public on climate change is necessary. Sharma said BP Koirala had long understood the importance of environment conservation and recalled that privately owned forests were nationalized for the conservation of forests. Former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala said Nepal had set an example for the world in community forest management after handing over the forest to the community.
“Today, Nepal can say to the world that more than 45 percent of our total land area is forested.
BP then foresaw that the earth would fight the climate crisis and that trees would be the biggest support for it. That’s why BP also took the tree as the election symbol of the Congress. ’
