. France head coach Didier Deschamps admits his side failed to live up to expectations after losing 2-0 to Spain in the 2026 World Cup semi-finals.
Deschamps said his team was “very disappointed” after France crashed out of the tournament after losing to Spain in the semi-finals at the Dallas Stadium.
According to him, the team’s target was to reach the final, but it could not succeed due to technical errors and lack of edge in attack.
‘Our players are very disappointed. Our goal was to reach the final. But today we played below our normal level technically and Spain was in complete control of the game,” Deschamps said.
He said that his own team should take responsibility for the defeat and that not being able to utilize the opportunities is costly. “It’s mainly our own weakness. We were not able to create a threat in the attack as expected. We also missed a chance to score due to some wrong passes. At the highest level of football, there is a price to pay for such mistakes,” he added.
Spain had a balanced and impressive performance from the start.
Mikel Oyarzabal converted a penalty after Lamin Yamal was fouled inside the penalty area. Pedro Porro then scored the second goal of the match with Dani Olmo. Porro was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his outstanding performance.
Spain will face either England or Argentina in Sunday’s World Cup final at the New York-New Jersey Stadium.
Spain, who won the World Cup for the first time in 2010 by beating the Netherlands, will be aiming to win the title for the second time.
Spain’s Oyarzabal has scored 18 goals in his last 20 international appearances.
He also became the sixth player to score 30 international goals for Spain. Meanwhile, France will now play in the third-place play-off on Saturday. Captain Kylian Mbappe will have another chance to increase his goal tally in the race for the Golden Boot. ANI
