. Tomato farmers had staged a demonstration at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu on Wednesday morning, protesting against the failure to get the right price for their tomatoes.
Minister
for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Geeta Chaudhary had called the agitating farmers to the Ministry and held discussion with them demanding to ensure fair price of their produce, make market management effective and protect farmers’ interests.
During the discussions, the farmers said that the government should play an effective role to ensure fair price of tomatoes, easy market access and reduce the influence of middlemen.
Minister Chaudhary said that the Ministry was serious about the genuine demands of the farmers and directed the bodies concerned to immediately manage the market and make the supply system systematic.
The transportation of tomatoes from Kalimati to the Kathmandu Valley has started on Wednesday at the initiative of the Ministry and coordination of Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market.
According to the Ministry, the transportation was done to create an environment in which the farmers would get appropriate price for the produce by supplying tomatoes in the markets where there is demand in the market outside the Kathmandu Valley.
The Ministry
of Agriculture, Forest and Environment has pledged to carry out the works of market management, strengthening the supply system and expanding the market to ensure that farmers get a fair market and fair price for their produce.
