Kathmandu. The Armed Police Force (APF) has impounded 774 electric vehicles (EVs) of the BYD brand entering Nepal through the Korala border point.
According to APF central spokesperson DIG Bishnu Prasad Bhatta, the vehicles were impounded for further investigation on the suspicion that information regarding the change in tax rate on electric vehicles was leaked before the budget.
The Armed Police Force (APF) impounded the vehicles by conducting a security check campaign on various road sections from Kaski to Mustang on Wednesday night. All the impounded vehicles are of the BBID brand, he said. According to him, most of the vehicles were found being being transported to different districts without number plates. “The vehicles have been impounded for further investigation on suspicion of leaking information about tax rate change,” he said, adding that legal action would be taken against the concerned individuals and bodies if any irregularities were found in the customs process, tax determination and import activities before the budget. ’
When News Bank tried to contact Yamuna Shrestha, Managing Director of Cimex Inc., the authorized distributor of electric vehicle brand BYD in Nepal, his mobile phone was switched off. According to the information received, the government agencies were activated after the suspicion that the vehicles were inspected before the announcement of the budget for the fiscal year 2083/84 with the possible collusion between the customs staff, customs agents and businessmen.
The government has recently revised the tax structure related to electric vehicles in the budget for the fiscal year 2083/84. According to sources, investigation is being carried out on the suspicion that a large number of vehicles might have been imported before the budget to benefit from this change.
