Kathmandu. Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle has said that the news that the customs rate has been changed in the Finance Bill and the pages have disappeared from the documents are misleading and exaggerated. Speaking at the meeting of the Finance Committee on Wednesday, Finance Minister Wagle said that there was no policy manipulation in the customs rate and the issue arising due to technical reasons has been made unnecessary dispute.
Responding to the queries raised by lawmakers in the meeting, Wagle said that some rates were revised by the governments of CPN-UML and Nepali Congress last year. He said that only the customs rate of the carriers carrying blood and vaccines has been changed modestly. According to him, these are only humanitarian and technical issues and some other issues have been revised only for linguistic clarity. Stating that the media reports have created confusion, he refuted the allegation that the rates were secretly run by the Finance Ministry.
He also explained the technical aspects of Microsoft Word regarding the allegation that 16 pages were missing from the report. According to him, in a document of more than 450 pages, even a slight change in the size of the column can lead to a significant change in the overall number of pages. He asserted that no unauthorized changes have been made in the bill after it was presented in the sovereign parliament. He described the controversy as an attempt to “bring a storm in the teacup” and said he was ready to face it head-on. He has also urged the people not to misunderstand the activities carried out in the interest of the nation and human sensitivity. He also expressed his commitment that he was always ready to clarify any further doubts on any issue.
