. Paddy plantation has been completed in 69.77 percent of the total area of paddy cultivation in the country as of July 15 this year. According to the data released by the Department of Agriculture, paddy plantation has been completed in 958,574 hectares of land out of 13,73,862 hectares of arable land in the country.
However, the pace of planting has slowed down this year compared to last year.
Last year, paddy was planted in 72.14 per cent of the country’s land, which is 2.37 per cent more than this year.
Province-wise, the most encouraging paddy plantation has been seen in the Far-Western Province, where paddy plantation has been completed in 90.67 percent of the total area.
Similarly, 80.65 per cent paddy plantation has been completed in Lumbini Province while 78.36 per cent, 77.33 per cent and 77.05 per cent paddy plantation has been completed in Gandaki, Bagmati and Karnali provinces respectively. In these provinces, planting is above average.
On the other hand, the pace of plantation has been relatively low in Madhes and Koshi provinces, which are considered to be the main rice producing regions of the Terai.
Madhesh Province has the highest area of paddy cultivation of 382,433 hectares in the country so far, which has only 57.93 percent paddy plantation. Similarly, only 54.86 per cent of the area in Koshi Province has been planted, which is the lowest among all the provinces. According to the data up to mid-July, the rate of plantation varies in different provinces on the basis of the impact of monsoon and availability of irrigation.
