Calls for immediate steps to protect children affected by monsoon-induced disasters and continue education

Kathmandu urged to take immediate steps for the protection and continuity of education of children affected by monsoon-related disasters. KATHMANDU: The National Campaign for Children as a Zone of Peace has called on the government and agencies to take immediate and effective steps to protect children affected by monsoon-induced disasters and abuse and violence against children.

Issuing a press release on Tuesday, the campaign expressed concern that natural disasters and various forms of abuse and violence against children with the active monsoon across the country have seriously affected their lives, safety, education and overall rights. The flooding in the Bagmati River has destroyed school uniforms, textbooks, educational materials and daily use materials of many children at the Radha Swami Squatters’ Holding Center in Sundarighat, Kirtipur Municipality-10 of Kathmandu. According to the

campaign, it is necessary to ensure that the children affected by the disaster are immediately provided with alternative educational materials, necessary relief and regular attendance in schools.

Similarly, the campaign has expressed sorrow over the death of three children of a family in a waterlogged pit at Golbazaar Municipality-7 of Siraha and the death of a six-year-old girl in a pond at Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan City-11 of Bara. The campaign has stated that children are still losing their lives due to lack of proper management of dangerous potholes, waterlogging and unsafe structures in public places, construction areas. The campaign has urged the government to immediately provide educational and basic materials to ensure the continuity of education of children affected by floods and inundations, to make effective preparedness and rapid response mechanisms activated at the local level for the safety and rescue of children during the monsoon period keeping in mind the best interests of children. Likewise, the campaign has called for providing child-friendly relief, health services, psychosocial support and necessary protection services to the disaster-affected children and to conduct awareness programs on disaster risk reduction among the community, schools, parents and children. Tilottam Poudel, chairman of the campaign, said it was the shared responsibility of the state and all stakeholders to ensure that the right to life, safety, education and protection of children during natural disasters is affected under any circumstances.
