‘Should we buy a party with money? Should we sell the party for money?’
Kathmandu. Nepali Congress (NC) outgoing President Sher Bahadur Deuba has questioned the legitimacy of the special general convention and said that he was not removed from the post of party president and he did not hold the general convention.
Addressing the 15th Kathmandu district convention of the Nepali Congress Deuba faction here on Saturday, he said he urged the party to forward the issue of special general convention only after the party’s regular general convention. Recalling the history of the special general convention, he said that in the past, even Subarna Shumsher and BP Koirala were in favour of the special convention.
He said, “The convention that is being held in Kathmandu district is very important. Now I should not speak without speaking. What I must say about this special general convention is that in the beginning, when the special general convention was held, Subarna Shumsher was the president, he organized it. Even though BP Koirala was not the president, he was also a supporter of the special convention. Deuba said that the special general convention should not be displaced even when he was the president. He said that he had suggested to Gagan Thapa to start the process of electing a new leadership only after the regular general convention.
He said, “I was the president at that time. I had said that this special convention should not be displaced. What I had told Gaganji was, look, let’s start the regular convention. Fix the date as per the advice and proceed with the work. After taking charge, I issued the entire district date, talk to him, let’s not do this, then the general convention started through the process of statute.
He said that he was not removed from the post of president and that he had filed a case in the court against him.
He said, “Now I am the party president, I have not been expelled, I have not even held the general convention. That is why we have filed a case in the court. That is why we filed a case in the district court.” Deuba claimed that the chief of the Election Commission had also spoken publicly about the threat to his life. He also raised the issue of Rs 18 crore related to the party and alleged that the party was being bought on the basis of financial transactions.
He said, “Ilam Sapkota and 18 crore is a small piece of money. Now the party has been bought by giving that money. Are we going to sell the party for money?”
